Freshman photo after Makeda Thomas’ master class.
Today I woke up with the thought that I was having ballet this morning – I put on my leotard and tights, grabbed my ballets shoes, and was ready to get to the barre…

When I realized that my master class with Makeda Thomas was today,I cannot begin to tell you how happy I became. Today, I could dance in the way that I have grown up learning how to, and I could not wait to move like that again.  I was extremely excited to take a class with Makeda and so grateful that I was able to. Her style of contemporary drew from the African diaspora, and as a result, I had one of the most fun and freeing classes in a while.

By freeing, I mean able to dance fully without regards to technicalities and being able to dance what feels good; I came out of this class feeling as though I gave 100% of myself 100% of the time. I know that I am a very technical dancer, but one thing that I love and don’t get to do often in the technique classes I am taking is to be able to free my body when dancing. I wish that I could feel this way everyday, but it will be something that I have to find for myself in each of my technique classes.

Again, I am so grateful to have taken Makeda’s class and to have the opportunity to learn from her!
